The client approached Mantair to discuss the options for replacing a failed septic tank which was serving multiple properties.  It was the clients wishes to have their own independent septic tank.

Site Investigations

Mantair engineers attended site to conduct a detailed survey of the existing drainage arrangements and carry out percolation tests to determine if the sub-strata was suitable for a septic tank soakaway system.

The results of the site survey showed that a septic tank installation would provide an effective means of waste water disposal, and provided the information required to determine the size of soakaway necessary.

Septic Tank Specification

Mantair engineers recommended the installation of a 2800 litre Klargester Alpha septic tank. The Klargester septic tank is made from composite GRP and is performance tested to EN-12566-1 requirements.

Septic Tank Operation

Sewage enters the septic tank into a settlement chamber, allowing solid waste (sludge) to sink and liquid to rise to the surface. This surface liquid makes contact with oxygen and the organic matter starts to breakdown biologically.

This liquid still contains sewage but in small enough particles to be carried through the discharge outlet and into the receiving soakaway.

Septic Tank Installation

Scope of the works included:

  • Exposing the existing foul drainage pipe work and installation of new drainage to the location of the new septic tank system;
  • Excavation of suitably sized hole in preparation for the installation of the septic tank;
  • Installation of the septic tank, including for a concrete surround;
  • Installing a new discharge drain from the septic tank to the existing soakaway system;
  • Removal from site of all surplus excavated areas;
  • Backfilling all excavations and leaving the area neat and tidy.

On completion of the ancillary works Mantair engineers commissioned the septic tank system and removed all machinery from site, leaving the garden in a neat and tidy manner.

Stringent regulations govern the installation of septic tanks and there are several reasons why a septic tank may not be allowed for installation. Should a septic tank installation not be suitable for your property then a Mantair engineer would guide you through the alternative “off mains” drainage solutions available.
